Luxor is one of the greatest cities of the ancient world, Thebes grew in importance during the Middle Kingdom and was the political capital of Egypt during much of its New Kingdom period of glory; it was then a religious capital for centuries thereafter. The city was founded in the era of the Fourth Dynasty, and until the Middle Kingdom, Thebes was nothing more than a group of simple, adjacent huts. However, it was used only as a cemetery for burying the dead. The governors of the provinces were buried there from the era of the Old Kingdom and beyond. Luxor, or Thebes, is the capital of Egypt during the Middle Kingdom and the New Kingdom. It continued to play a fundamental role until the end of the Pharaonic era. On the eastern bank there is the Luxor Temple, the Karnak Temple, the Kabash Avenue linking the two temples, and the Luxor Museum. As for the western bank, it contains the Valley of the Kings, the Deir el-Bahari Temple, the Valley of the Queens, Deir el-Medina, the Ramesseum Temple, the Temple of Habu, and the two statues of Memnon.
